Those of us with fond memories of the Kendall-Wall jams at the Black Swan may recall ludy Brown's name. The singer/ songwriter,/guitarist played there often and released a cassette or two of original songs. She stopped performing to raise a family but didn't stop writing songs. She recently moved to Nelson, BC but came back here to record some of those songs. Sub-titled 'Stories of Love, Loss and Resilience', even lesser episodes gain enormously from the perceptive edge of her lyrics let alone some pretty major ones. The sessions featured a reunion of sorts of the Black Swan crew: Gary Kendall on bass and co-producer; Teddy Ireonard, guitars and co-producer; Michael Fonfara, keys and Jim Casson, drums. There are special guests as well. Say It starts off with "Monkey Business" which is also the new video available at www.judybrownmusic. com. It's a rocking tune about a friend who's overstepped his bounds. The title song is well chosen, a relationship-ending moment in song and a harrowing one, made even more so by the understated vocal. Samantha Martin, Sherie Marshall & Stacie L. Tabb add very effective harmony vocals. They help out on "Roberta" as well. The tender ballad "I Dream" has the added attraction of Colin Linden on mandolin."Trouble", a jaunty song about what she's gotten into several times, features another old Black Swan friend, Jeff Baker, on harp. "Free Range Man" is as good as its title suggests. Brown's vocals serve her songs very well indeed and Teddy Leonard's arrangements are simply sparkling - it's hard to imagine a better backing band. This one's a gem and I hope she gets back here soon to perform it live

Say It, the fantastic new album from BC's Judy Brown is replete with marvelous songs. This is thanks, in part, to some musical talent from the Niagara region. Gary Kendall (bass, co-producer) and Jim Casson (drums) of the St. Catharines Blues group, the Mighty Duck Blues Band. They were part of the band that made this fabulous recording.  

The album is Judy's first after a long hiatus from the music industry. Now she's back with a vengeance and exploring different aspects of the Roots sound. While Blues is the main vibe of choice, she and the group also dip their toes into soul, country, folk, boogie woogie rock and more.  

Teddy Leonard (guitar, co-producer) and Michael Fonfara (keys) round out the main band and are joined by guests such as Colin Linden (mandolin) and Jeff Baker (harmonica). Wonderful background vocals are provided by Emily Ekelund, Bessie Wapp, Samantha Martin, Sheri Marshall, and Stacie L Tabb.

Singer-songwriter en gitariste Judy Brown is naast moeder van twee kinderen ook actief in de Canadese music scene. Wissel haar niet met de andere zingende Judy Brown, een Schotse zangeres die in London woont en, die bekend is als klassieke mezzosopraan en contra-alt, recitaliste en oratorio zangeres.  

In 2017 nam Judy Brown twee belangrijke beslissingen. Ze verhuisde naar Nelson, een stad in het zuiden van Brits-Columbia, in het westen van Canada. Het stadje ligt in de Selkirk Mountains, aan het meer Kootenay. De bijnaam van Nelson is, door haar vele gerestaureerde historische gebouwen in het centrum, ook wel Queen City. Judy deed deze move om dichter bij haar familie te kunnen zijn én, om de belangrijke, inspirerende artiesten gemeenschap in Queen City. Een tweede beslissing die ze dat jaar nam was, om opnieuw te gaan samenwerken met oude muzikale vrienden en producers Gary Kendall (Downchild Blues Band) en Ted(dy) Leonard. Het resultaat vatte ze samen in haar nieuwe studio album ‘Say It’.  

‘Say It’ komt er dertien jaar na ‘At Last’ [2005] en is een album met dertien nieuwe (voornamelijk originele) songs. Judy stond hiervoor in de studio samen met keyboardspeler Michael Fonfara (Downchild, Lou Reed), drummer Jimmy Casson (Mighty Duck Blues Band, Downchild), bassist Gary Kendall (Downchild, Maple Blues Band), gitarist Teddy Leonard (Fathead, Maple Blues Band) en enkele backing zangeressen.  

Met de opener ”Monkey Business” laat Judy Brown al direct horen wat ze voor ons in petto heeft en, wat ze over zaken doen denkt. Met R. Kerr schreef Judy ”Roberta”. In dit nummer (en de titel song) wordt ze vocaal gebackt door Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar (Sheri Marshall & Stacie L Tabb). ”Something I Need” is een mooie ballade die door Michael Fonfara’s piano mooi ingekleurd wordt en ”Say It”, dat hierna volgt, een nummer dat bulkt van de zelfzekerheid. Met G. Ekelund schreef Judy het gevoelige ”I Dream”. In het nummer horen we een van de twee gastmuzikanten Colin Linden op mandoline en Judy’s stadsgenote Bessie Wapp als backing zangeres. Met ”Mama Told Me” gaat het tempo fors omhoog en zorgen Teddy Leonard’s slide gitaar en Fonfara’s piano voor het nodige vuurwerk. ”He Got Me” is een country rocker en, op ”Free Range Man” en de country ballade ”Curtains” is Judy’s dochter Emily Ekelund als backing zangeres te horen. De tweede gastmuzikant Jeff Baker is afkomstig uit Truro, Nova Scotia. Baker is de harpist op het rockend, bluegrass-achtig nummer ”Trouble”. ”Shifting Sand” (een nummer dat Judy schreef samen met Loretta Dunnville & Ray Zablockis) is opnieuw een mooie ballade en de afsluiter ”Gone For Good” het laatste feestje.  

‘Say It’ is een belangrijke volgende stap in Judy Brown’s muzikale carrière. Het album met prachtige nummers over liefde, verlies, veerkracht en weerbaarheid zal beslist een breed roots publiek aanspreken. Judy Brown is terug van even weg geweest te zijn!
